Engaging kids with the basics
As long as you have a pen and a piece of paper, there is a plethora of activities over which you can bond with your family.
Guess the word/movie/book
One player chooses a word, which could also be a movie, actor or book, and the other player has to guess that word. There are few hints given in the form of a couple of letters that come in that particular word. Rest of letters the player has to guess.
For example, if you choose the movie “TITANIC”, this is how you can present and give the hints: _ I _ _ N _ C
You can decide how many guesses the other player may get.
Continuous lines
This activity requires you do start anywhere on the page and a draw a line. Now, it is not as easy as it sounds, because the rule is you can’t cross a line when you draw! The players can take turns in continuing the line. It will look something like this:
Pictionary
This is one of the most popular and engaging activity!
Just think of an item. Now you have to draw that item for the other player to guess what it is. Set a time limit for guessing the item.
Here is a list of medium and hard difficulty level words that you can use to play with your child!
Paper telephone
This activity is suited for 3-4 players. Each player begins with a piece of paper. At the top of the page, players draw a picture and pass the paper sheet to the next player. With this new piece of paper, the players writes a title or description for the picture and then folds the paper so that only the sentence can be seen.
The sheet is then passed to the next player who will draw a picture to go with the sentence. Again, the player folds the paper so that only the picture is visible and passes to the next player. And the activity continues in the same way.
At the end, it will be amusing to see what you and your child drew and wrote
Tell a story
It is an interesting story telling activity that is great when you have 3-4 players. One player starts with the first line of the story, for instance, it could something like, ‘Once upon a time, there was girl named Lily’. And then the sheet is passed to the next player, who adds the next line, which could be something like, ‘Whenever Lily told a lie, she would turn red’. And the activity continues like this. Use your imagination and encourage your child’s creativity by writing interesting twists and turns you can imagine!
At the end, have fun reading the stories you created!
Picture Riddles
You can create interesting picture riddles for your child to boost their thinking and problem solving skills. A picture riddle is when you write a word or phrase in the form of codes or symbols.
Look at the picture riddles in the image. The answer for these riddles are: “Working over time” and “Top Secret”. You can create many such picture riddles for your child to solve!
Make your own crossword
This one is my personal favorite. This is a fun activity and at the same time helps your child with his conceptual understanding. For instance, your child is learning about ‘Solar System’. One of the interesting ways of making learning fun is to create a crossword for those topics! Look at this example beside:
You can create a crossword for various topics your child is learning or his interests and hobbies, and see how they solve them!
Basic resources like a pen and piece of paper can help in numerous ways to utilize time effectively!
